Start with geometry, not a hotel

For a total or annular eclipse, confirm that the observing site lies inside the central path. Totality duration falls rapidly near the path edges, so a location closer to the centreline usually gives more time and more margin for navigation error.

Check the Sun's altitude and azimuth at maximum. A coastal viewpoint can be beautiful but useless if hills, buildings or haze block the exact horizon sector where the event occurs.

Compare climate, then monitor weather

Historical cloud statistics help compare regions months in advance, but they are not a forecast. As the event approaches, switch from climate normals to several numerical weather models and local observations.

The best base often sits near multiple roads and microclimates. A slightly shorter eclipse under a clear sky is better than maximum duration beneath an immovable cloud deck.

Design a mobile plan

  • Choose a primary site and at least two alternatives in different weather directions.
  • Download offline maps and save exact coordinates, not just venue names.
  • Fuel the vehicle early and avoid roads that have only one exit.
  • Arrive many hours ahead; eclipse traffic often peaks immediately after totality.
  • Carry water, shade, warm layers, food, medication and certified eye protection.

Book with flexibility

Reserve cancellable accommodation when possible and read transport restrictions before paying. Some protected areas require permits, while informal viewing sites may have no toilets, shade or mobile signal.

Choose a destination with other activities in case cloud prevents observation. The trip then remains worthwhile even if the eclipse is hidden.
